If you are developing a business online and you will be utilizing the help of others as your staff grows I would like to share a few ideas that may help you put a more human face to your business venture.
1. Being different is good. You can deliver the same product that your competition does, but the method you use to deliver the product needs to be what separates you from them. You can also deliver something completely different and can still expect convincing response, but you have to believe in your ‘difference’. If you don’t believe it – your listeners will pick up on this as surely as a hound to a raccoon.
2. Freedom to fail. None of us have all the answers, but we like to let those around us believe that we have it all together. When you dream big dreams you unlock a powerful potential in the belief that new trails can be forged in your business. When you can’t see past prescribed methods of message delivery you miss out on opportunities to do something more – or do it better.
3. Do you have passion for the job? Without passion you are like a plane in a holding pattern. You’re in the air, but you’re not able to determine if you should land or fly away. Without passion you will eventually run out of gas and fall from the sky. Passion can make up for a huge deficit in natural ability because you have a vested interest in finding answers and tackling challenges.
4. Use every tool at your disposal. Every individual in your organization has skills. If you are a team leader working at team building then you will need to find where each staff member is especially gifted and allow them to use their own personal passion in ways that benefit your business and give them a strong reason to utilize their passion for the benefit of your organization. As my dad always said, “There’s more to being the boss than being bossy”. We can learn a lot from our employees and some of the greatest ideas will come from those who feel a freedom to voice their thoughts – even when those thoughts differ from yours.
5. Don’t be pushy, but always provide a call to action for listeners. Where do you want to go? Do you want your listeners to go with you? Invite them. Cast a compelling vision for where you are headed and engage site visitors in tangible ways to help you reach the goal together. Too many organizations either smash the vision into the psyche of the listener or they keep it a secret. Invite visitors to join as partners in the vision and not those who are either left off the memo list or those who may feel coerced into participation. If they feel coerced they will usually leave and never return.
These are just a few ideas to help you view your business as something more than a nondescript mechanism to earn cash. Your personality and passion need to infuse the end product and it will be that difference that can make or break your online business success.
