The Moneymaking Homemaker

Why are so many moms looking into work at home jobs? It’s probably not that hard to uncover some of the reason; rising fuel and food prices, global economic pressures, children at home that need care and the desire to have some control over your day-to-day activities.

Most of us are aware that the sheer act of surviving is a trick in and of itself. We recognize that in order to fuel an agreeable lifestyle money is required.

Consider this. A mom takes her two children to daycare, drives a second family car to a job that seems to pay just above minimum wage. She feels guilty about not being home for the kids, but one income just isn’t cutting it.

One day she begins to seriously look at the role she plays. When day care is deducted from her pay and then she deducts the cost of special clothing she has to purchase for her job not to mention gas and wear and tear on the vehicle she wonders if she’s actually loosing money by working.

The truth is she might be.

Part of the appeal of working at home, for moms especially, is that they get to interact with their children in a greater way, set their own hours and wear the clothes they want to wear.

In the end moms may actually do less work and gain an improved income by just staying home and finding business opportunities that allow them to work around the needs of their children.

One of the least expensive options for those who want to move in this direction is to find a need in their own community and fill it. This could be daycare or transcriptionist. They might be able to make special crafts or blankets or run errands for the homebound. They can set aside some of the proceeds from their local business to begin to pay for online opportunities or business franchise.

A work at home mom is something akin to fulltime juggler. Pulled like taffy by more than just children, this is the price to be paid for a new at home business.

If you find you are especially good at making one of a kind items or in a specific service you should investigate whether those goods or services might have a life in an online environment. You may find freelance transcriptionists may be in high demand or the need for hand knitted caps may be enough to keep you busy.

One of the keys for an at home business is diversification and multiple clients. Especially if you can do more than one thing - keep all options open. If you gain a really large client you should still attempt to gain other clients. You don’t do this as a mechanism of greed, but because when you rely on one client for your paycheck your paycheck can go away when the client moves in a different direction.

When you continually foster new relationships and clients you may find you have a greater ability to keep income flowing when clients move on.

Working at home is not all about leisure, but it does present a more workable environment for many who need to find the best in both worlds and discover that place might just be away from the 9-5.
